Literature Study And Clinical Investigation About Toxic Traditional Chinese Medicine In Treating PHC Patients

Objective 1.To study toxic traditional Chinese medicine from the aspects of historicalorigins, theoretical foundation, compatibility and application in treating PHC (primaryhepatic carcinoma); 2.To evaluate the effect of toxic traditional Chinese medicine intreating PHC patients.Methods 1.The literature study: reviewing the literatures in all ages to summarize theancient disease names, to investigate the etiological factors and pathogenesis, theoreticalfoundation of the treatment, and the application of toxic traditional Chinese medicine in theancient days as well as today. 2. The Clinical research: By treating 30 advanced PHCpatients with gecko decoction, the gecko decoction's effect on PHC patients will be knownfrom the changes of KPS scores, mass size, symptom scores, TTP (time to progression) andsurvival time.Results 1.The literature study revealed that PHC was identified with a lot of ancientdisease names, such as "piqi", "fuliang", "zhengji", "feiqi", "tympanites", "jaundice","xuehuang", and so on. The pathogenesis of the PHC was that the combination ofdampness, heat, phlegm, blood stasis, qi deficiency lead to the damage of the organism, andresulted to the toxicants incubating in the body. These medicine were always combinedwith other drugs as treating PHC patients. 2.The clinical investigation: the responserate(CR+PR) was 3.3%(CR0, PR1),the disease control rate(CR+PR+NC) was 63.3%; KPSscores condition: 18 cases improved, 7 cases stabilized, 5 cases decreased; symptom scores:5 cases obviously improved, 14 cases improved, 6 cases stabilized; TTP: 2 months to 1.5years,the median TTP was 8.6 months; survival time: 3.2 months to 1.8 years, MST was 8.6months, 6months survival rate was 73.3%, lyear survival rate was 43.3%.Conclusion Toxic drug's antihepatocarcinoma effect is verified by both clinical trial andmodern experimental research. Gecko decoction is effective in treating PHC patients on theaspects of relieving symptoms, improving the quality of life and extending the survival time,it deserves further studies.
