Objective:To investigate the difference in serum calcium, phosphate and parathyroid hormone(PTH) levels in patients with acute and chronic renal failure. Methods:The clinical data of 40 patients with acute renal failure and 40 with chronic renal failure were collected, who underwent examinations for the biochemical indices before treatment. The serum calcium, phosphate and PTH levels were compared between the two groups. Results:The two groups were matched for distribution of age, gender, and nationality. No significant differences were found in serum creatinine, urea nitrogen, or uric acid between the two groups. The serum Corrected calcium, phosphate and PTH levels were 2.44±0.22 mmol/L,1.63±0.46 mmol/L and 129.70±70.18 pg/dl in patients with acute renal failure, respectively, showing significant differences from the levels in patients with chronic renal failure(2.23±0.33 mmol/L,1.94±0.49 mmol/L,and 444.70±350.92 pg/dl,respectively).Conclusion:Patients with chronic renal failure have significantly lower serum phosphate and PTH levels but higher serum calcium level than patients with acute renal failure.Examination of serum calcium, phosphate and PTH levels may provide valuable assistance in the diagnosis of acute and chronic renal failure.
