Objective: Meningioma is one of the most common tumors in the central nervous system, and some documents reported its incidence was 13.4% in all intracranial tumors. Most of the meningioma is benign, but some is malignant with the characteristic of high recurrence and invasive feature. It is difficult to identify the nature of tumor in clinic and before operation. The therapeutic effect isn't ideal if only by surgery operation. This study is to detect the expression of E-cadherin in meniongioma, in order to understand its relation to the invasive activity and the peritumoral edema in meningioma, and to supply some evidence for the diagnosis and treatment of malignant meningioma. Methods: The expression of E-cadherin was detected in 67 cases of meningioma tissues, and the results aggregately were analyzed combing with clinical patho-parameters.We studied the relationship between E-cadherin and the invasive activity and the peritumoral edema in meningioma by retrospective test. The data was analyzed by means of the chi-square test.1. We collected the reports and the tissue samples of all meningioma patiets who had been diagnosed by pathology, clinic and imageolgy in our hospital between August 2003 and August 2005. 2. We examined some selective samples by common pathology method.3. We tested the expression of CDH1 in tumor tissues by immunohistochemistry method.4. We retrospectively studied the important part of CDH1 taking in the invasive activity and peritumoral edema in meniongioma.Result: CDH1 expressed mostly in the endochylema and/or cell membrane of the meniongioma cells. Among the 67 cases tumor tissues , 29 cases(43.3%) were positive for CDH1,and the expression significantly weakened at the excellent infiltrative station .Among the normal brain tissues, only 1 case(10%) was positive slightly for CDH1.The expressive level of CDH1 was different in different grade of meniongioma, and the higher the grade ,the higher the reducing degree. In the Grade 3 of WHO, the reducing rate was 83.3%(Sheet 1).In this group ,the Grade 0/â… of peritumoral edema ,11cases were positive for CDH1(28.2%) and 18 cases(64.2%)in Gradeâ…¡/â…¢.In the noninfiltrating group,15 cases were positive(32.6%)and 14 cases(66.7%) in the infiltrative one,and the difference was significant statistically(P<0.05).With the increase of the malignant degree, the expressive rate reduced gradually. Conclusion: By this study, we discovered that the E-cadherin taked an important part in the invasive activity and peritumoral edema of the meniongioma, and its impression was related to the pathological grade. So it is important to inspect the expression of E-cadherin in meniongioma for both understanding the biological behavior of meniongioma and judging its prognosis.
