Influenza is a kind of infectious disease caused by influenza virus,which is one of orthomyxoviruses.Influenza virus has three kinds of serotype, A,B and C.There are several subtypes in every serotype.The categorization based on the difference of Heamagglutinin(HA)and Neuraminidase(NA).The influenza virus A has 16 HA subtypes and 9 NA ones. Among the total,H1～H3 and N1～N2 are correlated human influenza virus. The A virus,which exisets in the nature widely,can affect poultry,pigs, horses or any other animals,besides humanbeing.The B virus is found in human being only,and the C virus is epidemic in human and pigs.Millions of people were killed by influenza during the epidemic in the 20th century. Large manpower and material resources have been thrown into the study in attempt to find out effective ways to cure and prevent the infectious disease in every country.In traditional Chinese medicine,the syndrome of flu is just like exopathic Disease.Its syndrome is included in not wind-warm disease and spring-warm disease of epidemic febril disease but also taiyang disease,yangming disease and shaoyang disease of exogenous febrile disease.The exopathic disease theory of TCM has long history and plentiful content,including a great deal of classical therapeutic principle and decoctions on treating flu.Nowdays,experimental research on anti infuenza virus of TCM is spreading out activiely,including research on antiviral herbs and decoctions in vitro and in vivo.These research guide clinical treatment and prevention of flu with TCM.The herb Ilex Latifolia Thunb has much effectiveness,such as heat-clearing;promote the production of body fluid,promoting blood flow and detoxication.It is used in Guangdong herbal tea usually.Many folk doctors prescribe this herb for influenza.While,there are no reports about anti-influenza virus of Ilex Latifolia Thunb.The study aims to demonstrate the antiviral effect and mechanism of the herb.Literature reviewReview of the ancient literature and up-dated data on the influenza virus were done.It is well recognized that the epidemics of influenza occurred at regular intervals.When the viral H and N were both changed,the major pandemic broke out.Though medicine such as amantadine,rimantadine and ribavirin can inhibit the influenza virus,the side effects of these drugs minimize their clinical uses.Up to date,this infectious disease has not been controlled effectively.It is believed that Traditional Chinese Medicine would play an important role in the treatment and prevention of influenza.Laboratorial studyStudy the antiviral effect and its mechanism of Ilex Latifolia Thunb in treating influenza pneumonia in vitro and in vivo.Experimental result in vitro indicate that Ilex Latifolia Thunb has not anti Ifluenza A(H1N1)virus directly on cell culture.Experimental of anti influenza virus in vivo results indicate that Ilex Latifolia Thunb has effect on treating mouse influenza A(H1N1)pneumonia in certain degree,It can reduce the score of lung consolidation(SLC), relieve the pathomorphism seriousness of viral pneumonia,and prolong the average survival time of mice.The results of analyzing correlative immune index indicate Ilex Latifolia Thunb has regulative effects on immune function of mice infected with Influenza A(H1N1)virus.It can promote the level of IL-2 and reduce the level of TNF-αin blood serum of infected mice.Accordingly,it can enhance cellular immune function and regulate balance of between protective cytokine and proinflammatory cytokine.Moreover it may amend disorder of immune function and relieve immunological inflammation and pathologic injury which are caused by influenza virus.The results of detecting the virus in lung tissue by Real-time quantitative PCR indicate Ilex Latifolia Thunb has directly inhibition effects on virus load in the lung tissue of mice infected with Influenza A(H1N1)virus.Accordingly,it can reduce the direct and indirect damager on the body by Influenza A(H1N1)virus.
