Gentiana apiata N. E. Br., belonging to Gentianaceae, commonly known as Qinlinglongdan in place of origin or Zhulingcao in traditional Chinese medicine, is a perennial herb only growing in Qinba mountain of China, and its whole plants has been used as folk Chinese herbal medicine for the treatment of inappetence, hepatic injury disease and gynaecopathia disease. Up to now, few of the phytochemical investigation on Gentiana apiata N. E. Br. has been found. In this paper, the progress on chemical constituents and pharmacological research were reviewed. The 70% ethanol extract of the whole herb of Gentiana apiata N.E.Br, extracted by ultrasonic radiation, was suspended in hot water and extracted successively with petroleum ether, ethyl acetate. The water-soluble part were isolated predominantly by macroreticular resinLSA-30, silica gel and Sephedex LH-20 column chromatography and afforded nine compounds. Among them seven compounds'structures were elucidated by spectral methods or comparing them with authentic samples. A novel secoiridoid was identified as isoswertiajaposide A(Lxk-4). Six known compounds were 7-deoxyloganic acid (Lxk-1), gentiopicroside (Lxk-2), isoorientin (Lxk-3), swertiamarin (Lxk-6), 6′-O-β-D- glucopyranosylgentiopicroside (Lxk-8), asystasioside A(Lxk-9), respectively. Lxk-1, Lxk-4, Lxk-6, Lxk-8 were isolated from the plant for the first time.
