Aster tataricus L. f. (Ziwan in Chinese), which belongs to the Compositae family, is traditionally prepared from the dried radix and rhizomes of it. It has been used for the relief of coughs and as an expectorant and it possesses diuretic, anti-tumor, antibacterial, antiviral and anti-ulcer activities. The systemical research on the EtOAc Ext. was carried out and twenty-one compounds were isolated. On the basis of various modern spectral analyses, seven compounds were identified. Meanwhile, the simultaneous determination of shionone and epifriedelanol that were the main compounds to efficacy of this drug was studied. We reported this chromatography condition of the epifriedelanol for the first time. This experiment is useful and important for the quality control of this plant. The roots of Semiaquilegia adoxoides (DC.) Mkino (Ranunculaeae) were reported in Chinese Pharmacopoeia as a traditional Chinese Medicine for several symptoms since they are believed to possess antibacterial, anti-flanmmatory and antineoplastic activities. Guiding by the anti-tumor pharmacological experiment, fractionation of an ethanol extract from the roots of this plant led to the isolation of twenty-five compounds by repeated column chromatography, Sephadex LH-20, PTLC, re-crystallization and HPLC. Three long chain unsaturated fatty acid were premilinarily identified by 1H-NMR, and by means of 13C-NMR and ESI-MS spectral analyses, forteen compounds were identified. Six of them were firstly isolated from this species and genus. These compounds are caffeic acid twenty-four ester (2), 4-hydroxy-3-methoxy-benzoic acid (3), ferulic acid (4), hydroxytyrosol (6), 2,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid methyl ester (7) and 3-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzoic acid hexa ester (14). Moreover, cytotoxity effects with LA795 cells also screened for those isolated compounds.
