| Objective Coma caused by severe craniocerebral trauma and stroke is normal in neurosurgery. There is no effective therapeutic tool for these patients. Moreover, more cost is to pay for these patients'therapy. Many scholars are pessimistic for the prognosis of brain coma. How to make patients with brain coma come to around is a protrudent problem. For the past few years, median nerve electrical stimulation is used to promote revival of the patients of brain coma. This method has more or less therapeutic effect. According to acupuncture, it can treat brain coma by stimulating many acupoints on Pericardium Meridian of Hand-Jueyin. To investigate therapeutic effect of Pericardium Meridian of Hand-Jueyin stimulation therapy in improving the level of consciousness for the patients of severe head injury and stroke and the mechanism of its hastening awakening from coma. Methods 40 unconscious patients with brain coma were randomly assigned to the treated group (n=20) and control group (n=20). The patients in the control group were treated routinely. Besides routine therapy the patients in the treated group were treated with Pericardium Meridian of Hand-Jueyin electrical stimulation. Before the initial treatment, transcranial Doppler(TCD) was performed to determinate the systolic velocity, mean velocity of basilar artery (BA). As the treated group were treated with initial stimulation, TCD was performed after 30 minutes'stimulation under the same conditions. The changes of the cerebral blood flow rates of basilar artery (BA) were compared and analysed. One month later, Glasgow Come Scale, Glasgow Outcome Scale, motor function and verbal function were the indexes of assessment for patients'prognosis. Results In the treated group, the blood flow rate of the basilar artery(BA) increased significantly after Pericardium Meridian of Hand-Jueyin stimulation therapy. One month later, Glasgow Out come Scale, verbal function in the stimulation group were also statistically better than those in the control group. The blood flow rate of the basilar artery in the treated group is better than those in the control group too. However, there was no significant difference in motor function. Conclusions The Pericardium Meridian of Hand-Jueyin stimulation can improve the level of consciousness of patients in brain coma. In addition, the treatment of stimulation can reduce mortality and morbidity. The main mechanism of The Pericardium Meridian of Hand-Jueyin stimulation in treatment of brain coma is to improve patients'mean blood flow rates. The integrated therapy of Pericardium Meridian of Hand-Jueyin stimulation therapy and western medicine can promote revival of coma and improve life quality for the patient of severe craniocerebral and stroke. |
