Objective: To study the worth of telomerase activity, P53 and nm23 in diagnosis, treatment and prognostic evaluation of colorectal carcinoma. Method: Telomerase activity was examined by using In Situ hybridization mRNA of telomerase. The expression of P53,nm23 were examined by immunohistochemical technique in 100 cases of colorectal carcinoma. The relationship between the expression and clinical-pathological behaviors were also analyzed.Result: (1) 27 of 30 (90.0%) exhibited telomerase activity in cancer tissues compared with 3/30 (10.0%) in adjacent cancer tissues, 0/30 in normal tissues. There was significantly difference between them(P<0.005).Telomerase activity level in colorectal carcinoma was significantly associated with the invasion, clinicopathologic stage and lymph node metastasis (P<0.05), but no distinct difference was found in other parameters. (2) The positive rate of P53 expression was 57.0% (57/100). The expression of P53 had a relevancy with the grade and clinical stage (P<0.05), but no distinct difference was found in other parameters. (3) The positive rate of nm23 expression was 53.0% (53/100). There was no significant association with the clinical stage and other parameters (P>0.05). (4) A minor relationship was observed between P53 over-expression and nm23 low-expression, while no noticeable relationship was found between telomerase activity and P53,nm23 expression (P>0.05).Conclusion: The expression and level of telomerase activity,P53 gene and nm23 mutation play independent role in development of colorectal carcinoma respectively. They might be a good sign and helpful in diagnosis, treatment and prognostic evaluation of colorectal carcinoma. The expression of P53 and nm23 examined simultaneously might be worthful.
