0bjective: To observe levels of serum lipid peroxidation and activities of antioxidases and effect of hemoperfusion (HP) on chronic renal failure(CRF)patients. Methods: One hundred and ten CRF patients (without acute or chronic infection, malignancy, multiple organ failure, vitamin C, vitamin E, chalybeate treatment) were randomly divided into hemoperfusion combined with hemodialysis group (HP+HD group, n=55) and simple hemodialysis group(HD group, n=55). Normal control group consisted of 25 healthy people. The serum malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) levels of al1 patients and controls were detected before and after the treatments. Results: (1) The serum MDA and SOD levels in both treatment groups were significantly higher than those in control group, the serum TAC and GSH-Px levels in both treatment groups were significantly lower than those in control group(P< 0.05 ) , and there was no significant difference between two treated groups before treatment (P< 0.05 ). (2) The serum MDA level decreased and the serum SOD, TAC, GSH-Px levels increased after treatment, and there was significant difference in both HP+HD group and HD group(P< 0.05). (3) Compared with HD group, the decreasing level of serum MDA and the increasing level of serum GSH-Px in HP+HD group after treatment had significant difference (P< 0.05), however, the increasing level of serum SOD and TAC in HP+HD group equaled to HD group(P>0.05).(4) Before treatment, the serum MDA and SOD levels in both treatment groups had significantly positive correlation with serum Cr and BUN, however, the serum TAC and GSH-Px levels in both treatment groups had significantly negative correlation with serum Cr and BUN(P< 0.05). The serum Cr and BUN levels decreased significantly after treatment in both HP+HD group and HD group. Compared with HD group, the decreasing level of serum Cr in HP+HD group had significant difference(P< 0.05).Conclusion: There are high 1evels of disbalance of oxidation and anti-oxidation in CRF patients and the degree of oxidative stress has significantly positive correlation with serum Cr and BUN. HP is an effective method to decrease oxidative stress and elevate activities of antioxidases.
