Objective To probe into the prevalence of carotid artery atheromatous plague in cerebral infaction patients and the reason of carotid artery atheromatous plague .Methods Carotid artery was evaluated by ultrasound in cerebral infarction group and contral group. The site, echogenicity, size and number of plagues were determined. The intima-media thickness(IMT) of bilateral common carotid artery were examined. The results of Carotid Arteries Ultrasound were analysied. Results The prevalence of carotid artery plague in elderly cerebral infaction group and contral group were 96.0% and 89.5% respectively, without statistically significant difference. The prevalence of carotid artery plague in no elderly cerebral infaction group and contral group were 64.7% and 24.2% respectively, with statistically significant difference. The rate of soft and compound plagues in the elderly cerebral infaction group were significantly higher than those in the contral group. Conclusions There is a close relationship between carotid artery atheromatous plague and cerebral infaction..Early finding of carotid artery plague by ultrasonography and controlling of risk factors play very important roles in the prevention and treatment of cerebral infarction.
