Objective:To study the expression of Androgen receptor(AR)and Hypoxia inducible factor-lalpha(HIF-1a)and their relationships in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma(ESCC).Methods:SP immunohistochemical staining was used to examine the expression of HIF-1a and AR in 67 cases of ESCC and 30 cases of normal esophageal tissue.The relationships of AR and HIF-1a to the clinical pathologic features of ESCC were analyzed.The correlations between the expression of AR and of HIF-1a were analyzed by using Spearman's rank correlation method.Results:The expression of AR and HIF-1a in ESCC were significantly higher than those in normal esophageal mucosal epithelium(P all<0.01).The expression of AR was positively correlated with the depth of tumour invasion(r =0.292,P=0.017),differentiation(r=0.265,Pï¼0.038),reactive proliferation of lymphnode(rï¼0.281,Pï¼0.048),lymphnode metastasis(r=0.432,Pï¼0.019)and clinical stage(r=0.370,Pï¼0.004)of ESCC,in addition AR related to gender(Pï¼0.008).The expression of HIF-1a was positively correlated with the depth of tumour invasion(r=0.319,Pï¼0.009),reactive proliferation of lymphnode(r=0.399,Pï¼0.004),lymphnode metastasis(r=0.573,P= 0.001),clinical stage(r=0.370,P=0.004)of ESCC,While The expression of HIF-1a was negatively correlated with the differentiation degree(r=-0.300,P =0.014).Both ARand HIF-1a had no correlation with the age of patients,the size and the location of tumor(P all>0.05).The expression of AR and HIF-1a in ESCC were positively correlated(r=0.277,P<0.05).Conclusion:The expression of AR and HIF-1a have close relationships with the biologic behavior of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma,It will provide a new method in prevention and treatment of esophageal carcinoma and they might be new indicators to assess the prognosis of esophageal carcinoma.
