Objective Interleukin-18(IL—18)is a new cytokine,it's inclued mainly by macrophage and dendritic cell. Some study showed IL—18 has a important role in some patients with cancers. We investigate the clinical significance of serum IL-18 levels in the patients with colorectal carcinoma. Methods The serum IL-18 level was detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA)in 48 cases of colorectal carcinoma and 48 healthy controls. Results The mean serum IL-18 level was significantly higher in patients with colorectal carcinoma than in the healthy control(P<0.05).The serum IL-18 was much higher in patients with each stage disease than in the healthy control(P<0.05). The serum IL-18 was much higher in patients with stageⅢand stageⅣdisease than in patients with stageⅠ(P<0.05).Conclusion The serum IL-18 level has a close correlation with the clinical stage, globate glands metastasis and tumor infiltrating depth. The serum IL-18 level may be used an important tumor marker in screening colorectal carcinoma, preoperative staging and monitoring recurrence.
