Objective In order to develop the medicine that can protect the vascular endothelial cells, we research the protective effect of tanshinone_IIA, the fat-soluble component of radix salviae miltiorrhizae, on vascular endothelial cells of the patients of unstable angina pectoris and thus lay a theoretical foundation for the selection of active monomer in radix salviae miltiorrhizae. Methods 100 selected patients of unstable angina pectoris are divided into two groups, 50 for test group and 50 for control group respectively. Normal therapy of angina pectoris is applied to both groups with the exception that the test group is augmented with tanshinone_IIA. Hematoid tests are given to patients for their biochemical indexes of plasma Nitric Oxide (NO), Endothelin-1 (ET-1 ) and Von villebrand Factor (vWF) before and after the treatment. Results After the treatment the plasma NO index of the test group is obviously higher than that of the control group (76.58±16. 12 versus 61. 52±15. 61) . The result is significant in statistics (p<0.01), while on the contrary the ET-1 and the vWF are pretty lower (48.46±8. 75 versus 50.83±10. 31, 125. 65±17. 58 versus 147.24±16.63) . The result is significant in statistics (p<0.01), which shows the outstanding protective effect of tanshinone_IIA on vascular endothelial cells. Moreover, the plasma NO index of the control group is much higher after the normal treatment(61. 52±15. 61 versus 52.36±13.24 p<0.01) together with rather lower ET-1 and vWF indexes(48.46±8. 75 versus 72.36±9.63 , 147.24±16.63 versus 176.51±17.62 p<0.01). Both are significant in statistics. Conclusion Unstable angina pectoris is often accompanied with vascular endothelial cells trauma. The course of disease and prognosis of patients who suffer from unstable angina pectoris are closely related to the degree of vascular endothelial cells trauma. Tanshinone_IIA has an outstanding effect in protecting vascular endothelial cells, as is shown in this experiment, and it can effectively reduce the secretion and release of ET-1, therefore it is hoped that antoginsts can be made from it. At the same time, the change of plasma NO, ET-1, and vWF concentration for the test team suggests that normal therapy utilizing anti-platelet, anticoagulant, 3 -receptor blocker, and isosorbide 5-mononitrate also has an outstanding effect in protecting the vascular endothelial cells .
