Objective To study the quantitative expression and clinical significance of MUC1 mRNA in peripheral blood of patients with non-small cell lung cancer(NSCLC).Methods Real-time fluorescent quantitative RT-PCR method was applied to investigate the quantitative expression of MUC1 mRNA in peripheral blood(PB) of patients with NSCLC and healthy controls. Results The levels of MUC1 mRNA expression in NSCLC were singnificantly higher than those in healthy controls(t=2.0141, P=-1.5451E-13,P<0.05);In NSCLC,The levels ofMUC1 mRNA(t=2.0244,P=0.5151) were of no difference between squamous carcinoma and adencarcinoma(P>0.05 );MUC1 mRNA was correlated with pathological grades(F=25.6186,P=3.7329E-08,P<0.05), TNM stage(F=134.6148,P=3.4729E-22,P<0.05) and lymphatic metastasis(t=2.0484, P=-2.9098E-11,P<0.05),The levels of MUC1 mRNA expression in PB of NSCLC patients correlated intimately with pathological grade, lymph node metastasis and TNM stages.Lower differentiation, later TNM stage and lymph node metastasis showed higher expression, otherwise, the condition was on the contrary. Conclusions Abnormal expression of MUC1 mRNA correlates intimately with the occurance, development, infestation, metastasis and malignancy of NSCLC.MUC1 mRNA expression in PB may act as an estimation of malignancy and prognosis of NSCLC.
