The severe burn patients are always accompanied with a critical clinical course. In the early and middle stages after burn injury, water and electrolyte are abnormal, especially in severe burn injury cases. The patients will die because of the water and electrolyte's disturbance if inappropriately be dealed with after burning. In the early stage of burning, the patients may endure two key stages:a great amount of fluid exudation and acute inflammating response. There will be a lot of trace elements excreted by exudates or by urine in the diuresis. All of these will cause trace elements loss, thus influence various physiological functions.Various kinds of trace elements possess important biochemical and physiological characters and functions, they participate a series of physiological courses, such as metabolism, nutrition, infection, immunization, and so on.They play a very significant role in the treatment of the severe burn injury. It is important for the patients to supply essential trace elements timely and exactly.Trace elements' levels and changes should be determined and analyzed exactly,as well as their interrelationship with the degree of pathogenetic condition and the contents of enzymes in the sera of patients in different degree of burn injury and in different stage of disease. It will guide us to search for a proper treatment plan for anomalous metabolism of trace elements after burn injury. Objectives:The purpose of this experiment is to study the relationship between the levels of trace elements in serum and urine and the activities of SOD and GSH-Px in serum after severe burn injury, and try to provide theoretic basis for the clinical treatment of burned patients's trace elements's disorder.Methods:67 cases of newly severe burning patients in our hospital were investigated.Their trace elements' levels in serum and urine were determined using atomic absorption spectrophotometry(AASvario6,made in German). The enzymatic activities of SOD and GSH-Px in serum were measured with the kits provided by Nanjing Jiancheng Bioengineering Research Institute.Samples of the control group were collected at check-up.All datus were analysed by SPSS 12.0 software. Results:There was a high level stage of Cu in serum and a low level stage of Zn in serum after burn. The changes of levels of Mn,Se in serum were not evident. And the quantity they were excreted with urine was increased. The enzymatic activities of SOD and GSH-Px were decreased from the earlier stage until the metaphase. Conclusions:Because a great quantity of oxygen free radicals were generated by tissues, and SOD and GSH-Px were consumed immediately, their concentrations decreased significantly in the early stage after burn injury. The trace elements were released to the blood by the damaged tissues and increasingly excreted by exudate and urine, thus tissues can't generate adequate antioxidases, the abilities of resisting inflammatory reaction and tissue-repairing function should be descended. The results provide a theoretical clue for the necessity of the suppiement of certain trace elements of severe burned patients.
