Obesity is a major contributor to the global burden of chronic disease and disability, such as diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular conditions. It not only reduces the patients'quality of life, but also their life expectancy. In recent years, the growing economy and the vast availability of food are both responsible for the increased population of obese patients. It is thus the demand for the production of more effective weight-loss medications in the market.Yet,the side-effects of these drugs have been known to be unfavorable to many patients, and in some cases even damaging to the bodily system. The treatment of obesity using acupuncture has its long history, and is infamous for its effectiveness and minimal side-effects.The present study observes the effectiveness on treating obese patients using back-shu points as the focus.According to the theories of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the back-shu points have a direct impact on all the internal organs, thus possessing a high clinical effect on many conditions. In light of the fact that obesity is a condition due to combined causes, the treatment using the back-shu points should be effective. In the study,we randomly divided 60 obese patients into treatment and control groups. The recorded data, such as age, sex, degree of obesity and course of condition, prior to acupuncture treatment is statistically the same in both groups(p>0.05).After two courses of treatment, the treatment group had a total effective rate of 96.7%,composed of 5 clinically recovered cases, 10 very effective cases,14 effective cases and 1 ineffective case. The control group had a total effective rate of 76.7%,composed of 1 clinically recovered case,5 very effective cases,18 effective cases and 6 ineffective cases,Thus, the treatment group was more effective in treating obesity than the control group(p<0.05).As for the relationship between the course of treatment and the effectiveness of the treatment,it was observed that there is no significant difference between the two groups in this matter(p>0.05);the weight reduction fell at about the same rate for both groups. However,as for the rate of reduction of the local waist and hip-lines,the treatment group was observed to show earlier improvements than the control group(p<0.05).Conclusions:The treatment group had a higher overall effective rate and a better slimming effect than the control group.
