Objective:To investigate sexual function of male adults with Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia(BPH) in Changsha City, explore risk factors of erectile dysfunction among these patients, and to provide evidences for making strategies of prevention and treatment. Methods:Through stratified random sampling procedure,an eligible smple of 378 patients with BPH was selected for a cross-sectional investigation.Physical examinations, laboratory tests and questionnaires about the International Prostate Symptom Score(IPSS),Quality of Life score(QoL) and sexual function were tested. Then general descriptive analysis was adopted, followed by multivariate analysis with ED as a dependent variable,21 independent variables internalized including age, comorbidities, and lifestyle,Lower UrinaryTract Symptoms(LUTS) and so on;finally logistic regression model was built to analyze and compare influences of correlated factors.Results:378 patients' age ranged from 50 to 69 y(average 61.5±4.9y),of which there were 124 Patients in 50-59 age group and 254 in 60-69 age group.Regular sexual activity was reported by 78.9% (50-59 age group) to 66.1%(60-69 age group). No sexual activity was reported by 111 of the sample, with men aged 60.8±4.3 y.Sexual activity during the previous 6 months was reported by 266,with 170 reported on any degree of ED,in which 52.6%(n=140) had mild ED,6.1%(n=16) moderate ED and 5.3%(n=14)severe ED.72.6%of 266 reported 1 to 2 times regular sexual activities every month, and 23.3%reported 3 to 4 times. The proportion of men who a few times, sometimes, most times felt sexual desire was 35.0%,37.6%,23.3%.The proportion of men who were less satisfied, moderately satisfied and very satisfied with their overall sexual life was 24.8%,60.9%,0.8%.The result of multi-variable logistic regression analysis indicated that the odds ratio for the presence of ED was 1.1(95%confidence interval CI 1.03 to 1.17) for age,1.93(95%CI 1.06 to 3.52) for smoking, 2.47(95%CI 1.28 to 4.77) for drinking,2.03(95%CI 1.14 to 3.60) for hypertension,2.54(95%CI 1.39 to 4.63 ) for hyperlipidemia,2.75(95%CI 1.25 to 6.04) for diabetes,1.90(95%CI 1.02 to 3.69) for a sensation of not emptying their bladder completely,1.94(95%CI 1.05 to 3.93) for QoL(score greater than 3),0.54(95%CI 0.29-0.99) for Physical activity (more than twice a week).Conclusion:1.A total of 266 men were analysed.According to the IIEF-5 score,63.9%reported on any degree of ED(IIEF-5 score <22), 52.6%had mild ED(IIEF-5 score 17-21),6.1%moderate ED(IIEF-5 score 12-16),and 5.3%severe ED(IIEF-5 score 5-7).2.95.9%of 266 reported 1 to 4 times regular sexual activities every month, and the proportion of men who felt moderately satisfied with their overall sexual life was 86.5%.The attitude on sexual activity was related to the factors such as social environment, religious culture and so on.3.Physical activity(more than twice a week) was protection factor and age, smoking, drinking, hypertension, hyperlipidemia,Diabetes,a sensation of not emptying their bladder completely,QoL(score greater than 3) were risk factors for ED.
