Objective:To investigate the effect of acupuncture plus chinese herb in the treatment of xerophthalmia.Method:60 cases of xerophthalmia were selected according to diagnostic criteria and randomly divided into study group(acupuncture plus herb) and control group (acupuncture).Three local points such as Shangmutong(0.2 cun above the upper lacrimal foramen),Xiamutong(0.2 cun below the lower lacrimal foramen),Leiguanxue(0.3 cun above the outer canthus) were chosen as major points and additional ones were Cuanzu(BL2),Taiyang(EX-HN5).Acupuncture was conducted twice per week for 2 therapeutic course.The needles may be retained for 20 minutes per session and 5 sessions constitue one therapeutic course.The herb formula Mingmudihuangpian was taken 4 tablets twice per day.After 5 weeks of treatment, analysis was carried out based on both symptoms evaluation and tear secretion by Schirmer test.SPSS for window 13statistic soft ware was used for data analysis.Data of the samples was presented as average±standard deviation and comparing data prior and after treatment was conducted with T- test.Results:(1)There is significant improvement in symptom evaluation and tear secretion in both study and control group after 5 weeks treatment.(2)There is significant difference in symptom evaluation between study and control group after 5 weeks treatment.(3)There is significant difference in tear secretion between study and control group after 5 weeks treatment.Conclusion:There is a co-ordination action by combining acupuncture and Chinese herbs in treatment of xerophthalmia.and the increase of effectiveness is achieved by promoting tear secretion and regulating the imbalance of zangfu organs.
