Objective:To evaluate the expression of hepatoma-derived gorwth factor ( HDGF ) and vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF) in hepatocellular carcinoma. To explore the correlation betwwen the expression of HDGF and VEGF,and the implication of HDGF on survival in patient who undergone resection for hepatocellular carcinoma. Methods:The patients undergoing complete surgical resection of hepatocellular carcinoma were retrospectively reviewed. The expression of HDGF and VEGF were detected by immunohistochemical assay. To evaluate its prognostic value, the HDGF immunostaining was analyzed for potential correlations with the clinicopathologic characteristics of HCC.Results:The HDGF expression was seen in most of the patients with HCC,and markly higher than that in normal tissues (p=0.013) . VEGF expression was seen in partly patients, and higher than that in normal tissues (p=0.017) . The expression of HDGF closely related to the expression of VEGF (r=0.409, p=0.002) .The HDGF staining pattern was significantly correlated with the differentiation of HCC (p=0.021) . There was no significant relationship between HDGF expression and other clinicopathologic features. Univariate analysis and multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that the patients with high HDGF have shorter overall survival resperately, and HDGF were significantly independent predictive factors for overall survival in patients of hepatomacelluar carcinoma. Conclusion:The expression of HDGF and VEGF were higher than that in nontumor tissues, and the expression of HDGF was closely related with expression of VEGF (r=0.409, p=0.002) .The expression of HDGF was independent prognostic factors for overall survival. The assessment of HDGF may provide new insight on angiogenesis of hepatomacelluar carcinoma.
