Objective To investigate the status of anxiety and depression among breast cancer patients during chemotherapy period;to explore the factors related to anxiety and depression;to examine the effects of personalized music intervention on depression and anxiety among breast cancer patients during chemotherapy period.Method This study used a quasi-experimental study.Sixty breast cancer patients with depression during chemotherapy period were assigned to intervention group(n=30) and control group(n=30) randomly. The former received regular nursing care plus 9-week personalized music intervention, while the latter only received regular nursing care. The content of the intervention consists of the purpose, method, effects and attention related to music intervention;the personalized music intervention plan;the personalized music intervention diary;guiding patients' music intervention face to face and telephone follow. Before and after intervention, both groups of patients were tested on SAS and SDS.Results 1.The baseline results showed that the score of anxiety and depression in breast cancer patients was 44.40±5.75 and 45.83±4.90 separately. The patients with anxiety accounted for 18.4%(11 cases), while the patients accounted for 71.7%(43cases) and 28.3%(17cases) with mild and moderate depression.Multiple linear regression analysis indicated that the education, income, place of residence and medical expense resource were significantly related to anxiety and depression of patients.2.By paired-samples t-test,the score of anxiety and depression in both groups decreased after intervention, but the difference of intervention group had significance(P<0.01) while the one of control group didn't(P>0.05).3.By X~2 test, the anxiety rate was not significant before intervention in both groups(p>0.05).But after intervention, the number of anxiety decreased from 5(16.7%) to 0 in intervention group while the one of control group increased from 6(20%) to 7(23.33%).And the difference was significant(p<0.01).4.By X~2 test, the depression rate was not significant before intervention in both groups(p>0.05).But after intervention, the number of depression decreased from 30(100%) to 7(23.33%) in intervention group while the one of control group decreased from 30(100%) to 25(83.33%).And the difference was significant(p<0.01).5.Repeated measures analysis of variance showed that the main effects of intervention on anxiety and depression was significant(P<0.01),in other word, scores of anxiety and depression were significantly different with the change of the intervention level without considering time. The main effects of time on anxiety and depression were significant (P<0.05),in other word, scores of anxiety and depression were significantly different with the change of the time without considering intervention. There were significant interactions between time and intervention on the anxiety and depression.Interaction diagram indicated that the decreased degree of anxiety and depression were higher in intervention group than that of control group over time in the 9-week intervention. Conclusion 1.Anxiety and depression existed in breast cancer patients during chemotherapy period more or less. The education, income, place of residence and medical expense resource were significantly related to anxiety and depression.2.Personalized music intervention could relieve anxiety and depression in breast cancer patients during chemotherapy period significantly.
