Radix Ophiopogonis is a dried root tuber of Ophiopogon japonicus(Thunb.)Ker-Gawl in Liliaceae.It is a traditional Chinese medicine that can nourish yin and promoting the production of body fluid,moistening the lung to arrest cough.It was first recorded in the Shen nong's Herbal.Ophiopogo japonicus(Thunb.)Ker-Gawl. is famous good genuine medicinal material in Chinese Pharmacopoeia.Its root tuber is used as medical material and mainly contains ophiopogon polysaccharide,homoisoflavone,steroidal saponins,volatile oil, protein, microelement and amino acids. It is widely used in clinic for cough due to dryness of the lung,cough due to consumption,insomnia,constipation,diabetes,coronary heart disease,angina pectoris,arrhythmia.Varietal degeneration of Radix Ophiopogonis in the production area result from germplasm resources confusion,the field often was planted consecutively by asexual reproduction,such as the reduetion function of desease-resistance and the changes of root traits, all these made the yield of Radix Ophiopogonis reduced and quality declined. With Ophiopogon japonicus CM-CK, Liriope spicata, Hangmaidong as control, this special subject using the erect form Ophiopogon japonicus CM-1 as object of research. Strain characteristics,quality characteristics and characteristic spectrum of these species are discussed. According to the analysis of the correlation of several biological characters and yield characters, the determination of plants ophiopogonis tuber's water content, ash, extractives, flavonoids, polysaccharides and characteristic spectrum, the paper has given a studies on the strain characteristics and standards of improved variety of Ophiopogon japonicus. The main results were as follows:1. There is great difference between the Ophiopogon japonicus CM-CK and the erect form Ophiopogon japonicus CM-1. The yield, drying rate, high quality rate of the erect form Ophiopogon japonicus CM-1 are obviously higher than the Ophiopogon japonicus CM-CK. The length of root tubers/perimeter of root tubers of Ophiopogon japonicus CM-1 are much less than the Ophiopogon japonicus CM-CK.2.The results of quality characteristics of radix Ophiopogonis showed that the total polysaccharides content and the total flavonoids content of Ophiopogon japonicus CM-1 are obviously higher than the Ophiopogon japonicus CM-CK.The total polysaccharides content is higher than Liriope spicata and Hangmaidong.The total flavonoids content is higher than Liriope spicata,less than Hangmaidong. The water content, total ash, acid insoluble ash, water extract, alcohol extract of Ophiopogon japonicus CM-1 is superior to the Ophiopogon japonicus CM-CK and Hangmaidong, are obviously higher than Liriope spicata. 3. The results of characteristic spectrum of radix Ophiopogonis showed that the TLC spectrum, ultraviolet spectrum, infrared spectrum of Ophiopogon japonicus CM-1, Ophiopogon japonicus CM-CK and Hangmaidong are basically the same. There is great difference between Liriope spicata and Ophiopogon japonicus CM-1.4,The quality standard of Ophiopogon japonicus CM-1 was made out according to the above experiments results and Chinese pharmacopoeia 2005.In addition, this paper summarizes the progresss on chemical constituents and pharmacological effect of Ophiopogon japonicus.It provides some value for exploitation and utilization.
