ObjectiveLaparoscopic surgery was one of the important parts of The Fast-Track Programme in Colorectal Surgery(FTPCS), and External Therapy of Traditional Chinese Medicine (ETTCM) also took an important part in postoperative recovery. So we analysed the two different surgical approachs(laparoscopy and open radical resection) influences on the short-term curative effect of treatment for FTPCS. and ETTCM such as "evodiae hot salt sack abdomen externally apply" and "acupuncture at Zusanli point" influences on the postoperative recovery of patients with rectal carcinoma resection, in order to to evaluate the application value of laparoscopic surgery and ETTCM in the FTPCS.MethodsFrom Feb.2005 to Jun.2009, in Colorectal disease center of Guangdong hospital of TCM, the patients diagnosed as Colorectal carcinoma undergoing elective colorectal surgery were included in this study. And according to operation modes, it divided into two groups:laparoscopic group and open group. Two groups were compared with perioperative treatment, the time of various tubes withdrawing, the time to the first passage of flatus, the first passage of stool, the first off-bed activity, resumption of full-flow diet, the postoperative hospital stay, hospitalization expenses, surgical complications and readmission rate within 30 days postoperatively. And then according to the use of ETTCM, it divided into two groups:the treatment group and the blank group. The time to the first passage of flatus and the first passage of stool were compared between the two groups.ResultsThe time of drainage tube withdrawing/gastric tube/urinary catheter removal, the first passage of flatus, the first passage of stool, the first off-bed activity, resumption of full-flow diet, the postoperative hospital stay, and the rate of postoperative complications had significant difference between laparoscopic group and open group(P<0.05). Comparison of hospitalization expenses had no significant difference between laparoscopic group and open group(P>0.05). Comparison of the first passage of flatus, the first passage of stool were not different significantly between the treatment group and the blank group in ETTCM(P>0.05).ConclusionsComparison with open radical resection, Laparoscopic operation applied to colorectal carcinoma resection can decrease the rate of postoperative complications, hospitalization expenses and improve the postoperative recovery of patients. Laparoscopic surgery was one of the basic constituents of the FTPCS. And Laparoscopic surgery in patients undergoing elective colorectal resection was safe and effective. ETTCM such as "evodiae hot salt sack abdomen externally apply" and "acupuncture at Zusanli point" had no evident clinic efficacy on the postoperative recovery of patients with rectal carcinoma resection. Since the limitation of the study,we can't evaluate clinical curative efficient value of ETTCM impersonally, it needed be validated in further research.
