BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE:Hepatocyte growth factor, HGF, is a multifunctional neurotrophin originally identified and purified as a potent mitogen for hepatocyte. The activation of the c-Met/HGF receptor evokes diverse cellular responses, including mitogenic, morphogenic, angiogenic and anti-apoptot ic activities in various types of cell. Hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) is a potent angiogenic factor that also acts as a neurotrophic factor. As HGF has a potent cerebroprotective effect,it could be a prospective agent for the therapy against complicated ischemic brain diseases. The purpose of this experiment is to study relationship between HGF and ischemic brain injuries by mensuring serum HGF level in patient with CI.MATERIAL AND METHODS:The subjects are consisted of the experimental group of 40 patients with CI and the control group of 20 healthy individuals. Patients'blood samples of the experimental group is collected within 24hours,7days and 14days after cerebral infarction. The patients with CI are divided into 3 groups according to the size of the infarction. The concentration of HGF in serum is measured by highly sensitive enzyme-linked immunoabsorbent assay (ELISA) method.RESULTS:1. The serum HGF levels of experimental groups were found higher than those in control group at different time and the difference was significant (p<0.01).2. Statistical significant difference were not observed in the serum HGF levels among experimental groups(p>0.05).3.The serum HGF level of group with bigger size of the infarction is higher than those in groups of medium (p<0.05)and smaller size of the infaction(p<0.01). And, the serum HGF level of group with medium size of the infarction is higher than those in group of smaller size of the infaction(p<0.05).CONCLUSION:1. HGF is sensitive and stable indicators to acute cerebral infarction, so HGF is useful for early diagnosis of cerebral infarction.2. The serum HGF levels reflect the extent of brain tissue damage.3. HGF may play an important role in protection and restoration of damaged brain tissue after cerebral infarction.
