ObjectivesBronchial asthma (the asthma) is a chronic inflammatory airway diseases, which involved a variety of cells, including inflammatory cells (eosinophils, mast cells, T lymphocytes, neutrophils, etc.), airway structural cells (airway smooth muscle cells and epithelial cells, etc.)and cellular components. With the using of the western way of life and the development of global urbanization and the rapid increase of the urban population, the prevalence of asthma will rapidly increase in the next 20 years. At present, research work focuses on the relationship between the asthma and children's behavior, mental, psychological factors, but the report is fewer about the children's intelligence and intelligence structure in the developmental stage. No report was found in our nation about investigating the attention and integration ability in children with asthma by using IVA-CPT.In this study, asthma children as research subjects, through intelligence, integrated visual and auditory continuous performance test, we researched and analysised intelligence structure and attention, in order to look for cognitive functional defects for early intervention to enable them to develop the physical and psychological health.MethodsSelect 103 school-age children from China Medical University Affiliated Shengjing Hospital pediatrics for asthma from November 2008 to Augest 2009. They are 6 to 12 years age,IQ>85,67 cases are boys,36 cases are girls, select 103 normal children as control group whose the same age,the sex ratio, the same birth way IQ≥85.Children of all groups were measured intelligence by the application of C-WISC of Gong Yao-xian, Hunan Medical University, and integrated visual and auditory continuous performance test by the application of the United States Braintrain Company IVA-CPT test software. At the same time, parents filled out questionnaires. Applegate SPSS 13.0 statistical software, chi-square test was used to multiple regresssions and correlation analysis was also used, between two groups.compare the two groups using two pair T samples, and analysis of count data using chi-square test. Test:a=0.05 bilateral.Results1. The comparison of intellectual test results between asthma group and the control groupThe full intelligence quotient and the performance intelligence quotient and the verbal intelligence quotient of asthma children are in the normal range, The full intelligence quotient and the verbal intelligence quotient of asthma children were lower than the control group(P<0.05), and there was a significant difference. At sub-tests, classification and insight in verbal scale and picture array and coding in performance scale of asthma group were lower than the control group(P<0.05), and there was a significant difference. The remaining and performance IQ was no significant difference(P>0.05). At factor IQ, between the two groups in speech understanding factorr, there was a significant difference, while perceptual organization factor and memory/attention factor were no significant difference.2. Multiple regression analyses of C-WISC test results of asthma groupWe concluded that morbidity age was the independent risk factor to the full intelligence quotient。3.The comparison of IVA-CPT results between the asthma group and control groupThe asthma group in the full scale attention quotient, visual attention quotient, visual concordance quotient, auditory vigilance quotient, visual vigilance quotient, visual concentration quotient were lower than the control group, and there was a significant difference(P<0.05). The rest quotient had no significant difference(P>0.05).4.Multiple regression analyses of attention test resultsof asthma groupWe concluded that age, morbidity age, morbidity age and course was not the independent risk factor to the attention test resultsConclusions1.The full intelligence quotient and performance intelligence quotient and verbal intelligence quotient of asthma children are in the normal range, but the full intelligence quotient and verbal intelligence quotient were lower than normal children.2. There is an existence of the damage to asthma children's attention.3. The morbidity age was the independent risk factor to the full intelligence quotient.
