ObjectiveTo investigate the prognostic factors through analysis of clinicopathological characteristics of nine hundred and seventy-two colon carcinoma.MethodsA total of 972 patients with colon carcinoma treated surgically were studied by univariate and multivariate analysis.ResultsThe univariate analysis indicated that the predictors of survival were age, perioperative blood transfusion, perioperative carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) level, tumor site, tumor general type, depth of tumor invasion, lymphatic invasion, liver metastasis, extrahepatic metastasis, peritoneal seeding, pathological type and TNM stage. The multivariate analysis indicated that the independent predictors of survival were age, perioperative CEA level, tumor general type, lymphatic invasion, liver metastasis, extrahepatic metastasis, peritoneal seeding, pathological type and TNM stage.ConclusionThe independent predictors of survival were age, perioperative CEA level, tumor general type, lymphatic invasion, liver metastasis, extrahepatic metastasis, peritoneal seeding, pathological type and TNM stage. The most important available independent prognostic factor of patients with colon carcinoma treated surgically was TNM stage.
