| Objective Studying the principle of expelling dampness formulas composition in "Tong Su Shang Han Lun", to elucidate the ways Yu Genchu used expelling dampness formulas in clinical applications.Methods Five expelling dampness formulas from Yu Genchu's "Tong Su Shang Han Lun" have been selected. Each of these formulas has been analyzed in term of the formula composition, clinical usage and the modification of ingredients during different circumstances. Find out the law that Yu Genchu used for each formulas, and the overall principle of expelling dampness formulas composition and treating effect.Resultsâ‘ Yu Genchu treated retention of water and dampness disease according to different stages, and modified the formula to fit the mixed syndromes when the present of multiple pathological changes.â‘¡Yu Genchu modified the formulas from Zhang Zhongjing and other scholar physicians in order to treat new diseases.â‘¢Construction of expelling dampness formulas followed the six meridians theory, aimed for the smooth movement in triple energizer, and intensified the action of warming and activating qi.â‘£Based on the need of disease, multiple treating methods were applied.Conclusion Yu Genchu was the representative of Shao Pai Shang Han, he combined the theories of Shang Han and febrile diseases when treating retention of water and dampness disease. He constructed many useful expelling dampness formulas by integrating his own knowledge and clinical experiences. His theory brought a new concept about the use of expelling dampness formula and also enriched the treatment of retention of water and dampness disease.
