Yu Genchu, styled Zhaoyuan, lived in the Qianlong and Jiaqing period in the Shanyin city Zhejiang province. Several generations of his family worked as traditional Chinese medicine practitioners. He was very talented in medicine, before the age of20, he was already familiar with Neijing and Nanjing. On the basis of the classic works,he explored Zhongjing’s academic thought, selected the classic formulae, then he learned the experience of famous doctors from the specific time. Finally he summarized his30-year clinical experience, and wrote a book named Tong Su Shang Han Lun. This book laid the basis for Shao school of Shang Han Lun. His101prescriptions listed in the book were all very effective and each method was very flexible. All the prescriptions achieved good results in clinic. In recent years, research on Yum Genchu’s Academic thought and Tong Su Shang Han Lun has been done in a very wide range. Detailed discussion on Yu’s academic origins and Tong Su Shang Han Lun’s academic thought and clinical application of prescriptions has went on. However, systemic research on dosage of Yu’s101prescriptions was rarely invovled, but they were urgently to be studied. This paper intends to systemic research on dosage of101prescriptions of Tong Su Shang Han Lun in order to describe the characteristics of herbs used by Yu Genchu in a qualitative method. This paper will be divided into the following three parts:I To sort out Yu’s life and academic thought. First of all, reviewed Yu’s principle, strategy, formula, and herb established on the basis of qi transformation of six channel and syndrome differentiation and treatment which provided theoretical support for the analysis of the law of the prescription dosage. Secondly, summed up editons of Tong Su Shang Han Lun in order to detect the original version of Yu’s. Main reference to Lian Jianwei’s edition of San Ding Tong Su Shang Han Lun is a reliable source for these data. Thirdly, based on conversion of dosage measurement from classic formula to Yu’s prescription in order to compare their differences. Literature review shows that one Hang in han dynasty is equal to13.92g in modern time. Half sheng of chaihu in han dynasty is approximately to the current64g. Half sheng of wuweizi to30g, one piece of zhishi to14.4g, one big piece of fuzi to30and small one to25g. Briefly introduced development of weights and measures, and one qian in Qing dynasty is approximately equal to3.73g in modern time.II Study of formula:First of all, select eight formulae from Tong Su Shang Han Lun and Shang Han Lun with the same names in order to make a comparison in dosage and proportion. There are eight formulae including Xiao Qing Long Tang, Chai Hu Gui Zhi Gan Jiang Tang, Da Chai Hu Tang, Xiao Chai Hu Tang, Tiao Wei Cheng Qi Tang, Da Cheng Qi Tang, Xiao Cheng Qi Tang, Dang Gui Si Mi Tang. Conversion dosages in these eight formulae were recorded in excel form, and compared with the dosage of Treatise of Cold Damage in order to analyze difference between their dosage and proportions in each formula and summed up Yu’s inheritance and development from classic formula. Secondly, select two representative prescriptions created by Yu Genchu, namely Hao Qin Qing Dan Tang and Ling Jiao Gou Teng Tang, and gave a brief introduction of dosage and clinical application of the two prescriptions in order to excavate Yu’s experience of prescribing herbs.III Study of drug:12herbs with a specific dosage also appeared in Shang Han Lun with frequency more than12in Tong Su Shang Han Lun, namely Gan Cao, Huang Qin, Bai Shao, Da Huang, Sheng Di, Ban Xia, Chai Hu, Dang Gui, Fu Ling, Huang Lian, Hou Pu, Gui Zhi, were recorded in Excel form and analyzed in SPSS17.0software. Their minimum dosage, maximum dosage, commonly-used dosage, and commonly-used dosage range were calculated and compared with those of classic formula and pharmacopeia respectively in order to obtain principles and features of dosage application. What’s more, larger dosage on the criterion of more than5qian approximately equal to18.65g and smaller dosage on the criterion of less than0.6qian about equal to2.24g of101prescriptions in Tong Su Shang Han Lun were analyzed statistically in order to find characteristics of Yu’s application of larger dosage and smaller dosage of medical herbs.
