ObjectiveThe purpose of this thesis is to research the clinical significance by testing the plasma pentraxin 3 (PTX3) levels in patients with chronic heart failure(CHF).MethodsWe measured the plasma pentraxin 3 levels in 66 patients with chronic heart failure and 20 controlled subjects without heart failure by sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The chronic heart failure group was divided into four sub-groups by New York Heart Association functional class.Left ventricular end-diastolic dimension was measured by using color ultrasound diagnostic apparatus and left ventricular ejection fraction was calculated afterward. The plasma N-terminal prohormone brain natriuretic peptide levers were measured by automatic electrochemiluminescence immunoassay analyzer. SPSS10.0 statistical software was used to analyze the data.ResultsPlasma PTX3 concentrations were higher in patients with heart failure than in control subjects[(3.28±1.44)μg/L vs (1.80±0.63)μg/L] (P<0.01).Plasma PTX3 concentrations increased as the severity of New York Heart Association functional class advanced (P<0.01).Line correlation analysis revealed that plasma PTX3 concentrations correlated positive with left ventricular end-diastolic dimension(r=0.431,P<0.01) and the plasma N-terminal prohormone brain natriuretic peptide concentrations(r =0.595,P<0.01),but negative with left ventricular ejection fraction(r=-0.452,P <0.01).Conclusion1. PTX3 involves in the progress of heart failure and the level of it represents the degree of inflammation of heart failure.2. The level of plasma PTX3 elevates with the extent of the deterioration of cardiac function and may reflect the severity of heart failure.3. Plasma PTX3 concentrations correlated with left ventricular end-diastolic dimension and left ventricular ejection fraction and the plasma N-terminal prohormone brain natriuretic peptide concentrations, which suggests PTX3 may be used in chronic heart failure as a diagnosis and prognosis index.
