Objedtive To investigate the changes of plasma vasoactive intestinal peptide(VIP) in heart failure patients caused by coronary atherosclerotic heart disease and its clinical significance. Methods We selected 19 heart failure cases of 14 males and 5 females caused by coronary atherosclerotic heart disease as heart failure group, including 15 patients with III degree cardiac function and 4 patients with IV degree cardiac function. Meanwhile, we selected 19 patients without organic heart disease as indigestion group and 19 normal adults as control group, which were all well matched in age and sex. Results The plasma VIP concentrations in heart failure group increased more than those in control group(339.1±34.9ng/L versus 188.1±26.1ng/L,P<0.05).After heart failure was controlled with heart failure therapy for 7-10 days, the plasma VIP concentrations decreased significantly[(227±76.7)ng/L vs (339.1±34.9)ng/L] (P<0.05).Plasma VIP concentrations in indigestion group had significant differences compared with those in heart failure group(302.5±14.2ng/L versus 339.1±34.9ng/L,P<0.05),and were higher than those in control group(302.5±14.2)ng/L versus 188.1±26.1ng/L,P<0.05).Conclusion Plasma VIP concentrations increased in patients with heart failure and decreased after controlling of heart failure. VIP can be considered as one of the indexes to estimate the changes of patients'condition and one of the adjuvant therapies.
