Objective To investigate the effects of somatostatin analogue on intestinal obstruction. Methods Prospective analysis was carried on among 47 cases with intestinal obstruction from January 2009 to January 2010,including 26 cases of treatment group with somatostatin analogue (stilamin 3mg+NS48ml,4ml/h,intravenously) therapy add conventional therapy and 21 cases of control group with conventional therapy. conventional therapy includs fasting, gastrointestinal decompression, total parenteral nutrition and antibiotics treatment. Some aspects were analyzed between the two groups, which includes gastrointestinal decompression, the remission rate of abdominal pan and distention and the rate of flatus or defecation. Results Three days after treatment, the clinical symptoms were significantly improved in treatment group. The average volume of gastrointestinal decompression reduced in treatment group compared to the control group when use the somatostatin analogue the third day (292±221ml/d vs 412±217ml/d, P=0.035).The remission rate of abdominal distention in treatment group (88.46%) was significantly higher than that in the control group (61.90%) (P=0.03). But compared with the rate of flatus (76.92% vs 71.43% P=0.67) and defecation (53.85% vs 33.33% P=0.16) and the remission rate of abdominal pain (6.38±4.52 points vs 5.24±3.45 points, P=0.45), these two groups had no significantly different. Conclusions Somatostatin analogue can reduce gastrointestinal fluid secretion, relieve abdominal distention and help patients recover as soon as possible in postoperative obstruction patients or paralytic ileus patients.
