Objective: To observe the effect of"nourishing Yin to reduce pathogenic fire"and"tranquilizing by nourishing the heart"in the treatment of chronic heart rate increasing, and investigate the involved mechanism. Those researches will provide a theoretical foundation and available methods for the treatment of chronic heart rate increasing in traditional chinese medicine (TCM).Methods: Sixty appropriate patients were randomly divided into two groups: control group and test group. Control group patients were treated by metoprolol 12.5mg bid, while Tianwangbuxindan were give to test group patients, 8 pills tid. After 4 weeks'treatment, rest heart rate changes were recorded. The effect was evaluated by a scale table which was established based on rest heart rate changes and symptom improvement after treatment. Results: The clinical research shows, after 4 weeks'treatment, that the total effective percentage of test group is 83.3% compared with control group 86.7%(P﹥0.05), in terms of slowing rest heart rate. When it comes to symptom improvement, the total effective percentage is 43.3%, 80.0% according to control group, test group respectively (P﹤0.05).Conclusion: Tianwangbuxindan, with the function of nourishing Yin to reduce pathogenic fire and tranquilizing by nourishing the heart, can slow rest heart rate obviously. Meanwhile, it plays a role in symptom improvement, reducing cardiovascular event and prolonging life span.
