Object:To approach the effect and time of retinal photocoagulation for the Branch Retinal Vein Occlusion(BRVO).Method:This retrospective case series included 33 eyes of 33 patients with BRVO,18 patients of which were male and the other 15 patients were female. The cases were assigned to 2 groups according to the disease time.Group A(20 eyes),which included the eyes with BRVO less than 3 months; Group B(13 eyes), which included the eyes with BRVO more than 3 months. The intensity of retinal photocoagulation should be strength enough to get the moderate offwhite reaction of retina. The range of photocoagulation was decided by area of nonperfusion. If the area of nonperfusion was wider than 6 PD, pan retinal photocoagulation (PRP) is needed. The arteriovenous area and macular area should be bypassed. The patient with macular edema(ME) were applied macular grid photocoagulation. The comparisons were taken between both groups, including the preoperative Best Corrected Visual Acuity(BCVA),OCT, FFA, the postoperative BCVA, OCT, FFA.Result:1,The number of patient having chief complaints of vision deterioration is 6 in Group A(30%)and 8(61.5%) in Group B. Significance was got between the two groups. (P=0.000)2,Preoperative BCVA:In Group A the BCVA was 0.31±0.26; In Group B the BCVA was 0.11±0.12. Significance was got between the two groups(P=0.010).3,Postoperative BCVA:Significance was got between the two groups. (P=0.007). In Group A, the postoperative BCVA was 0.54±0.31, thus indicating that the postoperative BCVA was better than the preoperative BCVA significantly(P=0.000). In GroupB, the postoperative BCVA was 0.26±0.23, also indicating that the postoperative BCVA was bettr than the preoperative BCVA significantly(P=0.001).4,Vision acuity improvement after retinal photocoagulation:Group A got 90%(18/20), while Group B had 69.2%(9/3), SO Group A was preferable with significance(P=0.000).5,Improvement of retinal ischemia after retinal photocoagulation: improvement rate is 100%in Group A is 100%and 84.6%in Group B. Significance was got between the two groups. (P=0.006). Improvement of retinal ischemia of Group A is better than that of Group B.6,Improvement of ME after retinal photocoagulation:Group A got 100 %(7/7), while Group B had 87.5%(7/8), SO Group A was preferable with significance(P=0.000). Conclusion:Retinal photocoagulationan is an effective and safe treatment of BRVO, Improvement of retinal photocoagulationan for BRVO in early stage is better than later stage.
