Background:Laryngeal Carcinoma is also called cancer of the larynx, laryngeal cancer, carcinoma of larynx or Larynx cancer, and it's a very common malignant tumor in Head and Neck. This type of cancer is usually detected in people between 40 and 60 years old and more men than women are diagnosed with cancer of the larynx.Although the exact cause of cancer is unknown, some known risk factors for cancer of the larynx include:smoking, alcohol,GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease),poor nutrition, human papillomavirus (HPV),race, gender, age, weakened immune systems, toxic exposure, voice overuse and so on. The tissue type of the disease is chiefly laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC).For many years, total removal of the larynx (laryngectomy) followed by radiation therapy was the standard treatment. However, patients treated with total laryngectomy experience a complete loss of voice and may also experience impairment of swallowing function, leading to decreased quality of life in many aspects, including nutrition, social functioning and personal hygiene. In addition, the radiotherapy and chemo-radiotherapy groups had lower odds of survival than did the total laryngectomy group. So it's urgent for us to find a new way to treat laryngeal carcinoma. Objective: To investigate the expression of X-chromosome linked inhibitors of apoptosis (XIAP) and Livin in laryngeal carcinoma and its relationships between the expression of XIAP or Livin and clinical biological behaviors, such as patient's sex, age, pathological stage , lymph node metastasis and tumor differentiation. Methods: 107 patients from January, 2007 to December, 2009 were all diagnosed with laryngeal carcinoma and 42 cases was selected with laryngeal carcinoma and adjacent tissue sections as controls. The patients had received neither chemotherapy nor radiation therapy before tumor resection.Using two-step immunohistochemical to examine the expression of the two proteins .Results:1 The expression of XIAP in 42 cases of laryngeal carcinoma was 100%, in the control tissues was 61.9%, the difference between the two groups was statistically significant (P <0.01); The expression of Livin in 42 cases of laryngeal carcinoma was 42.86%, in the control tissues was 9.52%, the difference between the two groups was statistically significant (P <0.01)2 The difference between the two different clinical stages of XIAP and Livin has statistically significant (P <0.01);3 The expression of XIAP and Livin had no relationship with the elements such as sex, age, lymph node metastasis and tumor differentiation. The difference between every two groups was not significant (P>0.05).Conclusions:XIAP and Livin play an important role in the development of laryngeal carcinoma, but had no realationship with sex, age, lymph node metastasis and tumor differentiation.
