ObjectiveThis study detected the expression of Survivin, a novel inhibitor of apoptosis, inlaryngeal carcinoma, to investigate the relation between the expression of Survivinand pathological features of laryngeal carcinoma and to provide a theoretic basis ofoncogenesis, early diagnosis and progression for laryngeal carcinoma.MethodsUsing streptavidin-biotinimmuno-histochemistry(SABC), we studied 33 laryngeal squamous-cellcarcinoma specimens which were paraffin-embeded and 21 vocal cord polyps, to detect theexpression of Survivin in these tissues. Disease stages were determined by the pTNMclassification according to UICC criteria(1992). All specimens were approved by pathologicalexamination after operations.ResultsSurvivin was highly expressed in laryngeal carcinoma (the rate of expression is 63.6%), but only28.6% in vocal cord polyps. The difference between them is significant. But there was nosignificant correlation between Survivin expression and age, gender, clinical stage, histologicaltype, lymph node metastasis of laryngeal cancer patients.UonclusionApoptotic inhibitor Survivhi was highly expressed in laryngeal carcinoma but lowlyin vocal cord polyps. It is thought that Survivin may be a new predictor for laryngealcarcinoma of the oncogenesis and progression.
