As a female contemporary writer to be reckoned with, Chen Ran's novels are radically distinctive in both contents and forms. She has been always on the verge of non-mainstream literature, making unremitting efforts to explore the living predicament and status of women, with her independent feminine expressions and writings. She displays her own uniqueness with strong feminist consciousness and relentless exploring spirits. This paper mainly discusses about characteristics of Chen Ran's novels, which will be elaborated in three parts. The first part depicts the deepening of sense of loneliness. This chapter begins from the writer herself and loneliness, studying the lonesome feminine scenery. In her works, loneliness becomes common vital signs of females; however, the loneliness here is quite out of the ordinary. The writer together with the women in her works displays the significance of solitary life by keeping to loneliness. The second part discusses about the development of feminist consciousness, which is divided into two sections: one is about the writer's strong consciousness of female subjectivity, and the other is about a softening of male images, expounding the further development of feminist consciousness. Chen Ran describes female experience in a bold, reckless manner, showing much of a writing stance of overthrowing male-dominant say.The final part discusses about both success and failure of Chen Ran's novels. Her novels stand out in artistic features, such as the application of modern expression techniques, abundant figures of speech and permeation of musical elements. Of course, however brilliant the writer is, his/her writing has some defects, and Chen Ran's is no exception. For example, Chen Ran comes down strongly in favor of loneliness, which leads her to indulge in self-admiration unduly, and her writing shows a trend of crankiness and emptiness. Chen Ran adopts personal writing and a resolute attitude of overthrowing man-dominated society instead of explaining how to rebuild the social ties between men and women after the overthrowing. These are all problems Chen Ran must be confronted with during her writing process.
