| Robbe-Grillet was the leader of Le Nouveau Roman in France. He had pursued literary creation since his novel Rubber was published in 1953.During over 50 years'literary career, Robbe-Grillet produced many new novels which were very different from traditional ones.In 1963,his memoir Towards a New Novel which reflected his novel concepts was published. These pioneering novels and novel theories had exerted extensive and profound effect on the development of novel in the latter half of 20th century.Robbe-Grillet's concepts of new novel were based on his own world view.Under the influences of western post-industrial society and all kinds of postmodernism, Robbe-Grillet considered the world was full of uncertainty. So he presented brand-new novel-creating concepts conbining with his own creating practice.Firstly,he advocated eradicating depth myth and planarly describing the world by rejecting meanings, planarly describing objects and humans.Secondly,he opposed regarding literature as a political or moral tool and thought that what novel sought was itself. He regarded the form of novel as its essence. The innovation of the novel's form is the focus of the"revolution of novels"that he sparkpluged. At last,Robbe-Grillet appealed the readers to participate actively in the literary creation rather than accept the texts passively. His novels which were full of rupture and pretermissions made the passive readers feel disappointed but granted the active readers many opportunities to participate in creation. On the whole,Robbe-Grillet's concepts of new novel was bolshy, scattered and contradictory.Partially, each of the arguments of them had its own value and limitations. The Uncertain Reality Theory affirmed the uncertainty of the developments of everything but it ignored the certainty of the developments of everything; The Eradicating Depth Myth Theory dispelled the significance of meaning, however,it neglected the fact that literature is humanism; The Form is Enssence Theory emphasized that the form of novel was its enssence and the novel itself was a independent artistic world, but it denied the existence of novel's content; The Readers Creating Theory affirmed that the readers had the rights to participate in creation, but it was difficult for general readers to implement. |
