A Research On Chinese Verbal Quantifiers' Acquisition In Foreign Students

This paper focuses on verbal quantifiers for the second language acquisition and Teaching Chinese as Foreign Language(TCSL).Based on the quantitative analysis and qualitative analysis, we observe and study how some students from four countries acquire the verbal quantifiers. Through analysing the results of the verbal quantifiers questionnaires, we conjecture how the foreign students acquire Chinese verbal quantifiers.Then we evaluate the distribution of verbal quantifiers in some TCSL materials and grammar syllabus, and give some advice about how to teach verbal quantifiers. The paper contains four main parts:First, we define the scope of verbal quantifiers in the paper. And we sum up the research results of acquisition and ontology fields about verbal quantifiers.Second, we investigate ninety-eight verbal quantifiers'questionnaires, and we conjecture how well the foreign students know about the Chinese verbal quantifiers. Then we analyze whether the sex and the native background affect the verbal quantifiers'acquisition. Affect that, we speculate the order that the foreign students acquire the Chinese verbal quantifiers.Third, we define how the verbal quantifiers are arranged in two textbooks and one grammar syllabus for TCSL. We find overall there are some shortages in these books, such as pay less attention in verbal quantifiers, low coverage, too few explanations, and few exercises, etc.Fourth, to improve the Chinese verbal quantifiers'teaching, we give some advice. The teachers would strengthen the verbal quantifiers'explanations and discriminations, use more communicative languages and encourage the students to use more verbal quantifiers in their ordinary communications.
