The score of this paper is the "formal language of Icon-painting in Medieval Europe" which is divided into 8 parts. Firstly, foreword introduction differentiated the content of the researching icon paintings in this paper and where and when they were painted. Secondly, starting with the Three kinds of style which Reflecting the life of the Middle Ages, Make a brief review for the Medieval icon paintings history evolution. Thirdly, through the medieval aesthetic theory research, create and explore the "Icon Painting" aesthetic standards and values, logically, through spiritual connotation, symbolism and manifestation conduct in common. Meanwhile, Pointed out the Triple significance of Icon-painting formal language. The first meaning is what the Screen given directly to person's direct-viewing feeling, including the identification of the subject matter; the second meaning is that the Permutation relations between the various parts of the screen form, as well as the sensorial form which sublimates by the kind of Permutation relations. The third meaning is that the symbolic meaning of hiding in the forms.From the fourth chapter to the seventh chapter of this paper, it has analyzed the formal language of the Dark Ages icon paintings in the space, shape, color and material. The analysis is dependent on the Triple significance of icon painting expressive form what was mentioned in Chapter Three.This paper at last pointed that the Triple significance of the Dark Ages icon paintings contribute perfect structure from mental spirituality to visual beauty by the analysis of the formal language of the Dark Ages icon paintings, which also be the reason of why the Dark Ages icon paintings can be enduring for thousands years. Only the soul be poured into, arts can be eternal and perpetual.
