In the long lasting river of mankind's history, eastern culture, represented by Chinese traditional culture, owns extremely distinctive features from the western one. The collision and blend of these two civilizations have constituted the glorious enlightenment of human beings. During the late 17th century, with the détente of conflict between Man and Han nationality, a new peaceful circumstance was able to be achieved under the government of Qing dynasty. Giuseppe Castiglione now started his career as a missionary by serving the contemporary government and painting for them. However, the emperor, in light of the protection of Chinese traditional art and the deeply-rooted Chinese atheistic, did not completely acknowledge the western painting features in his works. And because of that, a set of measures were made to control the development of artistic forms which coincidently gave birth to a novel style of painting. The approach of mingling western and eastern painting skills owned the compliment of the emperor. And it reached its peak during the QianLong period. In terms of new kinds of painting's nature, Castiglione didn't truly appreciate the spirit of the Chinese traditional painting as he improved western painting on the base of utilitarian. Therefore his works were lack of spirit while too much skilled. Dislocation is the main shortcoming of this painting genre which was finally discarded by the artists.Although the improvement of this genre was merely half-done, its appearance still raised people's reflection on the blend of western and eastern painting as well as provided an access to know more about western paintings and reform Chinese paintings. This essay focused on profoundly analyzing the process of the new kinds of new painting to find the point of eastern and western art in hope of effectively guiding the creativity.
