The study on the learner's error has been carried out since the 1950s and it has undergone stages such as Contrastive Analysis, Error Analysis and Inter-language Analysis. In order to make it clear what are the teacher's and the student's attitudes towards error and error correction, the researcher carried out two surveys. The research was conducted among students and teachers in Shanghai Southwest Engineering School. With questionnaire and interview, the researcher attempted to find out 1) What is the students'and the teachers'attitude towards error and error correction? 2) what is teachers'actual practice of error correction in class?3) What are students'expectations of the way of error correction?4) What is the most effective ways of error correction in their opinions?Meanwhile the researcher also conducts a test to find out which of the following way of error correction is the most effective:Explicit correction without explanation; explicit correction with explanation; Meta-linguistic feedback. The test suggests that explicit correction with explanation is the most effective while explicit correction without explanation is the least effective. This thesis is composed of five Parts.
