Liu Kai is one of the followers of Yao Nai, who is the most outstanding person in Tongcheng School. Among the followers of Yao Nai, Liu Kai had great achievement in literary theory essence of three great masters in Tongcheng, especially the literary theories of Yao Nai, and represents inheritance of Tongcheng disciplines. On the other hand, he exceeds the previous in many ways and shows its owning innovation. As for academic thoughts, Liu Kai pays attention to the spirit of practice, that is so-called the combination of theory and practice, or the combination of learning and politics. He also regards the so-called argument between Han and Song Schools in a compromised attitude. At the same time, he upholds the fusion of Han and Song Schools. For literary theory, Liu Kai advocates the combination of verse and prose. That is to say, he uses the advantages of verse to compensate for the disadvantages of prose. At the same time, Liu Kai establishes a harmonious and completed system of classical prose. It shows his expensive perspective and reflects the innovative theories of Tongcheng disciplines. At the same time, Liu Kai emphasizes the sensation and spontaneity in poems. He upholds that one should appreciate the poems by chanting. He also emphasizes the endless emotion and recitation of poems. As for his classical prose, Liu Kai stresses that it's necessary to make it full of power and grandeur. He tries to change the feminine style of Yao Nai's works by using a lot of sentences in literary style. There're over one thousand and three hundred works so far. His achievement is very remarkable, so it is no doubt that he is a great master of Qing poem. For his poems, the scope of themes is very wide, and deeply reflects the hard time in his life and the fickleness of human relationships. The art characteristics of his poem are also remarkable. Some are in ballad style, and some are in gloomy style because of the hard life. In words, the achievement of Liu kai's works and literary theory is very spectacular in Tongcheng School, what's more, he makes great contributions to the whole literature of Qing dynasty.
