Tongcheng School's Literary Theory On Ancient Chinese Prose And Records Of The Grand Historian

Being the originator of the two ancient Chinese prose, no one can deny the fact that Records of the Grand Historian plays a significant role in the future development of ancient Chinese prose. Simultaneously, as the largest ancient Chinese prose genres, the relationship between Tongcheng School and Records of the Grand Historian is quite close. The greatest contribution of Tongcheng School to the ancient Chinese prose is the establishment of theory system on it. People of Tongcheng School, especially its representative writers such as Fang Bao, Liu Dakui, Yao Nai and ZengGuo fan, write not unusual comments chapters on Records of the Grand Historian. What is more, taking into account Records of the Grand Historian as a model, a considerable portion of the writers proposed their own ideas on ancient Chinese prose writing, meanwhile, Records of the Grand Historian is used to conform and support their point of view. Several literature ideas are achieved more directly from summary of Records of the Grand Historian. Actually, it is said that Records of the Grand Historian makes a profound impact upon ancient Chinese prose of Tongcheng School, and moreover, Records of the Grand Historian is accepted by various writers who belong to Tongcheng School widely. From what has been mentioned above, research about the relationship between Records of the Grand Historian and Tongcheng School's literary theory on ancient Chinese prose is still valuable.Although fruitful results and plenty of research regarding either Records of the Grand Historian or Tongcheng School's literary theory on ancient Chinese prose is achieved by academic community. However, the research repecting relationship between Records of the Grand Historian and Tongcheng School's literary theory on ancient Chinese prose is just occasionally mentioned among certain writings and books, and the study about this relation is much little. In this paper, we focused on the main representative of Tongcheng School like Fang Bao, Liu Dakui, Yao Nai and ZengGuofan, and also the relationship between Records of the Grand Historian and Tongcheng School's literary theory on ancient Chinese prose is investigated.In Introduction, the significance, values and goals of topics are described and the simple statement and definition of the research objects are stated and defined, moreover, the previous research is reviewed and summarized.In the first chapter, from three aspects which contain illustrating the reason by system and structure of article, respect of Tongcheng School's Chinese prose writer to Records of the Grand Historian, following the example of Records of the Grand Historian and taking GuiYou guang as an intermediary, the relationship between Tongcheng School's literary theory on ancient Chinese prose and Records of the Grand Historian is taken care entirely. This makes us own a basic understanding of relations between Tongcheng School literary theory and Records of the Grand Historian.The relationship between Fang Bao's literary theory on ancient Chinese prose and Records of the Grand Historian is discussed in Chapterâ…¡. "The doctrine of Yi & Fa" is not only the basis for Fang Bao's literary theory on ancient Chinese prose, but also the cornerstone of Tongcheng School's literary theory on ancient Chinese prose. Fang Bao discussed Records of the Grand Historian by "The doctrine of Yi & Fa" and "The doctrine of Ya & Jie", from ancient Chinese prose techniques to ancient Chinese prose language skills. In this chapter, Fang Bao's literary theory on ancient Chinese prose will analyzed elaborately, then the conclusion will be obtained. "Discuss and measure ancient Chinese prose only by using'The doctrine of Yi & Fa'can just obtain one aspect of article contents"In Chapter III, The relationship between Liu Dakui's literary theory on ancient Chinese prose and Records of the Grand Historian is considered. Based on Liu Dakui's "The doctrine of Shen & Qi", the characteristics of Records of the Grand Historian such as "strange", "grand", "long", "sparse", "change" are investigated.According to Yao Nai and Zeng Guofang's interpretation on the "Yin & Yang, Hardness & Softness" pattern, the article style of Records of the Grand Historian is discussed and three manifestation forms of Records of the Grand Historian, which has virile beauty in its articles is proposed in the last chapter.
