1970s is an important period for the Chinese American literature, during which a large number of representative writers and works have turned up. Among these numerous writers, three leading authors have contributed a lot to the development of the Chinese American literature, they are Maxine Hong Kingston, Frank Chin and Amy Tan.Amy Tan, whose works are characterized by portraying the cultural differences and identity seeking, is considered to be a typical and successful contemporary Chinese American writer, In her representative novel The Joy Luck Club, Amy Tan vividly narrates some traditional Chinese culture phenomena, such as Wind and Water Theory, Five Elements System and the traditional Chinese myth to shape characters and attract readers. However, as an American citizen who has never lived in China before, Tan can only grope these Chinese cultural heritage from the western perspective. Meanwhile, by exploring the conflicts and reconciliation between the mothers who represent the Chinese culture and daughters who delegate the American culture, Tan tries to build a bridge to reach the cultural communication, thus seeking her own identity root. The thesis tries to probe the characteristics of such traditional Chinese culture narration in the novel The Joy Luck Club and analyze the effects behind it on the basis of the cross-cultural communication. And the thesis strives to provide a new angle to read the novel and enable the readers to have a better understanding of the different cultures.
