Confucius is the greatest thinker, statesman, great educator, as well as the founder of Confucianism of ancient China. As the recording and collection of Confucius's and his disciples'daily words and behavior, Lun Yu is one of the classics of Confucianism. Many scholars at home and abroad have been committing themselves to the translation of Lun Yu since its first translation at the end of the 16th century, which has become an essential activity of cultural communication between China and the West. Ku Hung-ming's translation of Lun Yu is influential among them.Translation studies have been flourishing as never before in these years. Translation studies of China also develop rapidly. Chinese Professor Hu Gengshen's idea of "Translation as Adaptation and Selection" on the basis of Darwinian's principle of natural selection and theory of evolution is a comprehensive study about the interactive of translator and the translational eco-environment. It studies the comprehensive characteristic of translational eco-environment and describes the nature, process, criteria principles and methods of translation from the perspective of eco-translatology.This thesis takes Ku Hung-ming's translation of Lun Yu as the object of study. By using the descriptive translation study, case study and by examining viewpoints of eco-translatology, the thesis proves the feasibility of eco-translatology, and enriches current researches of Ku Hung-ming and his translation and for the further study of applying eco-translatology to study on the other translators and their works. This thesis is made up of five parts:The first part is introduction, in which the significance of the study and the research questions, research methodology and data collection are included. Chapter Two is about the review of the previous studies. In this part, previous studies on Ku Hung-ming's translation of Lun Yu and on eco-translatology are discussed. Chapter Three is the theoretical framework, in which the origin, basic concepts of eco-translatology are firstly introduced, then is about the main viewpoints of eco-translatology. Chapter Four is the analysis part of the thesis. After the introduction to Lun Yu and the translation of it, this part is followed by the analysis of the viewpoints of eco-translatology in Ku's translation one by one, including adaptation and selection in Ku Humming's translation of Lun Yu; Ku's expectation to export Chinese culture in his translation of Lun Yu; survival of Ku's translation of Lun Yu;at the end of the chapter the implications of Ku's translation to the exporting of Chinese culture are discussed. The last part draws the conclusion that eco-translatology can be applied to explain translation phenomenon and Ku's translation of Lun Yu fits the translational eco-environment.
