| It is easy to understand that a successful conversation is not only accurate in grammar but also befitting the occasion. Therefore, the cultivation of the communicative competence becomes the main task during Teaching Chinese as a Second Language (TCSL). However, it is always found that those people who study Chinese as their second language couldn't use well what they have learned to appropriately communicate with others, that is to say, they couldn't use language to do things in their daily life without difficulties. In this paper, the author thinks that it is because those learners are deficient in "stylistic competence", which means a person is capable of choosing appropriate language varieties to communicate for different classic contexts. At the same time, in the process of language study, textbooks are one of key factors, for it both offers corpora and context of language study. Therefore, this paper hopes to test this hypothesis by investigating the textbooks and certain materials referring writings, for which the author think that a person's writing competence can well reflect his language competence, to offer some useful data for the compiling of Chinese language textbooks for people who study Chinese as their second language.
