A Study Of Zhai Word-family And A Concurrent Discussion On The Formation And Use Of New-Word-Model

Along with the development of the ages and the progress of the society, some new words appear and develop rapidly, which arouses a lot of attentions of people. Particularly, a certain word-families, which take some centralwords as marks, appear in large numbers in recent years and reflect the developments and changes of the society. Therefore, the study of new word-family is a special linguistic phenomenon worthy of attention and research in contemporary Chinese study. This thesis mainly studies the new word-family zhái(宅)which has a distinctive feature in new word-families. Basing on the predecessors' study, the thesis does further research on the formation, evolvement and motivation of zhái word-family in both diachronic way and synchronic way. The thesis also explores interrelated features of neologism's structure, defines the concept of New-Word-Model and discusses its influence on contemporary Chinese language system.Owing to the insufficiency of previous researches, this dissertation firstly analyzes zhái word-family by providing the systematic description and explication of lexical meaning and grammatical meaning, and tries to describe the trace of its changes by making use of knowledge of linguistics and lexicology from ancient, modern to contemporary time. Basing on the collection and analysis of word meanings and matching forms of zhái word-family, its usage and features are well explored here. Different from the traditional paraphrase, the word zhái has acquired the additional usage of a verb and an adjective. Its conceptual meaning and emotional meaning have also changed to a certain degree. Zhái gets stronger in word-building. It has formed some usual matching relationships and has certain regular forms and meanings. Therefore the system of the new word-family zhái has taken its initial shape.Secondly, the dissertation discusses the motivations of zhái word-family, firstly it provides definite analysis and affirmation of the significance and necessity of motivation analysis, afterwards it further explores in a deep arrangement the rules of word formation and the cultural connotative meaning. The birth of zhái word-family has both external and internal motivations, which influence and depend on each other and compel the development of the word family with the language structures and deep semantic relations being the direct source of its birth. Judged from the motivations of birth, zhái word-family has profound cultural connotation, there also exists some word-formation rules and word-standard. Meanwhile, the gradually mature process of the system of the new word-family zhái shows interrelated features of neologism's structure. Besides those mentioned above, the popular mind, psychological changes, and the needs of socio-pragmatics are the unceasing drives of zhái word-family. With the continuous emergence of new things and phenomena, zhái word-family enters a phase of steady development.Finally, the dissertation makes a deep theoretical analysis and summary of the previous research by using and inheriting new-word-model. Using formation and evolvement of zhái word-family as the typical case, it analyses the formation and evolving motivations of zhái word-model. New-Word-Model is composed by the relative concepts of Model Mark, Model Slot, and Model Base. Besides, New-Word-Model can be divided into different types from different point of view. Under the new conditions and needs of pragmatics, a lot of new words appear gradually by using language vehicles of economy and analogy. Different kinds of frames of New-Word-Models have formed in this way. With the birth and development of many new words, the system of New-Word-Models becomes more and more systematic and enriched. Basing on this, making a reasonable guess on the development orientation of New-Word-Model will help people pay attentions to and find linguistic phenomena, fact, and the reflection of social developments and changes. As a dynamic, open and novel new word system, its process of formation and evolvement is always worthy of our attention and tracing. By dynamic analysis to the new word families in the perspective of New-Word-Family, it will push forward the contemporary study of Chinese new words.
