Probing Into Tang Poetry Translation Criticism

By utilizing a combination of quantitative and qualitative analysis methods, the present thesis conducts a systematic study of the current state of Tang poetry translation criticism, in the hope of providing some insights for the establishment of a normative and systematic criterion for translation criticism and the overall improvement of Tang poetry translation.Translation criticism is closely related to translation practice and translation theory. To begin with, therefore, the author makes a literary review of the representative translation practices both within and without China. Then, from the perspective of translation aesthetics, the phenomenon of version diversity is discussed which makes objective and constructive translation criticism crucial in evaluating different versions. After that, the author conducts research on poetry translation theories from both China and overseas. Based on that, she intends to find a generally-accepted set of criteria for poetry translation which lays the groundwork for the following discussion of the criteria of conducting translation criticism. Later, the present thesis aims to investigate the nature, principle and criteria of translation criticism.Through the above discussion, this thesis is intended to draw several conclusions. First, research on Tang poetry translation is limited. Second, most of the research is related to theory. Third, criticism of multiple translations is neither adequate nor systematic. Fourth, too little research is based on readers'responses. Fifth, the attitude of critics should be more earnest.
