A Study Of The Title Translation Of Tang Poetry Of Xu Yuanchong From The Perspective Of Skopos Theory

Over the years,many translators have translated Tang poetry and produced a lot of great works.The study of Tang poetry translation has a long history,but researches about French translation of Tang poetry are not as fruitful as English translation,let alone a French translation focusing on text analysis.Title is an indispensable part of Tang poetry which plays a role to introduce context,express affection and show the forms of literature.Besides,titles of Tang poetry always include plenty of cultural elements where the duplicate name is widespread.Therefore,a contradiction between language conciseness and expression preciseness intensify difficulties to translate titles of Tang poetry.This thesis chooses Xu Yuanchong's "Tang poems" as the object of study,sums up the methodes of translation that Xu used,and uses the standard of functionalist skopos theory to analyze the translation of poetry titles.The first chapter combs the functions of the titles of Tang poetry,and summarizes the obstacles and difficulties during the translation of Tang poetry.The second chapter introduces briefly the origin and development of skopos theory,emphasizes the definition of skopos in this theory,and explores the skopos of translation in the case of the translation of Tang poetry according to the division of three possible skopos.The third chapter contains the text analysis.It summarizes the translation strategies and translation methods adopted by Xu Yuanchong through specific translation examples,and analyzes whether these methods and their effects are helpful to archieve purpose of translation.By combing and analyzing the purpose and methods of the translation,this paper attempts to summarize the experience to translate some Chinese works,with a view to provide a reference to future translators.
