| As a typical anti-totalitarian cautionary novel, Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell, exerts profound influence on modern society and enjoys widespread reputation in the world. This paper, grounded on concerned theories of totalitarianism in past researches, attempts to interpret totalitarianism deeply and completely so as to provoke people's thought and cause their attention on the theme of modern totalitarianism. The paper expounds totalitarianism in Nineteen Eighty-Four from three perspectives: operation mechanism, operation effect and modern revelation. It finally takes the modern significance of totalitarianism as the stance and end-point of the paper and demonstrates the ubiquitous and deeply-rooted characteristics of totalitarianism in various social fields to arouse people's attention and deliberation on modern totalitarianism. |
