George Orwell(1903-1950)was a British writer with worldwide influence in the early 20th century. He was praised as a solemn conscience of a generation. In the last years of his brief life,he wrote two dystopian novels-Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-four.These two works were given with the similar thought and spirit-Anti-totalitarianism.This paper will analyze the transition of totalitarianism in Orwell's novels via reading the four aspects-leaders,general public, discourse power and ideological strategy-of the works. In chapter one,the paper brings insight into the ruling regime whose signifiant has been generalized. From Napoleon to Big Brother,Squealer to O'Brien, the dominators of totalitarianism experience great transition-substantive leaders do not exist anymore. However, the invisible ruling power is more desperate. In chapter two,the paper focuses on the partial arousal among general public.Different from Clover and Boxer,we can see the consciousness of rebellion from Julia and Winston even under the control of totalitarianism. They tried to refuse the physical and mental restraint, but all the efforts were turned out to be in vain.In chapter three, the traditional instruments of totalitarian ruling are revealed.Better than the Seven Commandments and enormous dogs, the Newspeak and telescreen imprison all the behaviors of public in a more comprehensive and radical way.Without any abilities to act and think, people become no difference with man-faced puppets. The whole society is totally buried in horrible silence. In chapter four,we will take a sight into political tragedies of totalitarian government.Through the propaganda of social ideology,a trick of creating imaginary enemies and ultimate ideal, everyone loses his personality and freedom and gets immersed in the fake climax unconsciously. They all become the tools and toys of totalitarianism.
